The Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) and Finsbury Park Mosque (FPM)
organisedtheir joint annual Iftar gathering at Finsbury Park Mosque on Monday
20th June 2016.More than 60 prominent guests attended to share the iftar meal.
The Guest of Honour: Rt Hon Jeremy Corbyn, Leader of the Labour Party was
joined byother distinguished guests including the Shadow Secretary of State
for InternationalDevelopment Diane Abbott MP, the Shadow Defence Secretary
Emily Thornberry MP, theConsul General of the Turkish Embassy Mr Emirhan
Yorulmazlar, Mr Hadrizammi Mustafafrom the Malaysian High Commission,
the Leader of Islington Council Richard Watts,the Deputy Secretary General
of MCB Haroun Khan and the NUS President: MaliaBouattia. Other distinguished
guests included the superintendent of Islington Police NickDavies, London
Fire Brigade Borough Commander for Islington Patrick Goulbourne, TheCEO of
ACEVO Sir Stephen Bubb, Bishop Paul Hendricks, Mrs Mehri Niknam MBE from
TheJoseph Interfaith Foundation, the General Secretary of CND Kate Hudson,
Jointsecretary of Unite Against Facism Weyman Bennet, Journalist David Hearst,
BruceKent, Father Danial Sandham from St. John’s Church, Sister Pauline
Nashashibi fromSt. Thomas’s Church, The former Chief Superintendent in Harrow,
Dal Babu andCouncillor Caroline Russell from the Green Party. Dr Omer
El-Hamdoon – MAB President said: “This iftar is an example of how weenvision
Britain: people of different backgrounds coming together to [share a mealand]
discuss issues facing society, in a friendly atmosphere. Through events
likethese we can create hope and dispel hatred, and send a strong message to
those whowish to divide us.” Mr Mohammed Kozbar the chairman of FPM said:
“It was wonderful and inspirational tosee so many people turn up from all the
different communities, faiths, serviceproviders, politicians and organisations.
We were very honoured that everyone cameto share this special moment with us.”
The guests enjoyed the whole experience of the iftar. Guests who spoke including
Jeremy Corbyn, Emily Thornberry, Diane Abbott and Malia Bouttia at the iftarre-
iterated the importance of standing together for a brighter future. The whole
event was broadcast live by Aljazeera TV.
